The challenge: To define a future cardiovascular research agenda with reduced reliance on the use of in vivo models

The NC3Rs, in partnership with the British Pharmacological Society and the Physiological Society, has invited some of the UK's leading cardiovascular researchers to address this ambitious and difficult challenge at a one-day symposium on 31 March 2010 in central London.

Chaired by Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, University of Manchester, speakers include:

• Professor Sue Brain, King's College London
  Vascular biology: what are the essential techniques for elucidating key mechanisms?
  
  
• Professor David Eisner, University of Manchester
  Cardiac Physiology how far can one refine, reduce and replace?
  
  
• Dr Mike Emerson, Imperial College London
  Refinement and reduction approaches to thrombosis research

• Dr Sheila Francis, University of Sheffield
  Rodent models of Atherosclerosis
  
  
• Professor Sian Harding, Imperial College London
  Cardiomyocytes from human embryonic and embryonic-like stem cells as a model system
  
  
• Dr Derek Hausenloy, University College London
  Protecting the heart using ischaemic conditioning: Looking beyond animal models 
      
  
• Professor Julian Paton, University of Bristol
  Future aspirations for studies into central nervous system control of the cardiovascular system
  
  
• Dr Jurgen Schneider, University of Oxford
  The "MR-One-Stop-Shop" for cardiac phenotyping
  
  
• Professor Nic Smith, University of Oxford
  Reusing and refining measurements using computational models of the heart
  

The symposium is free to attend and open to all scientists (PIs, Post-docs and PhD students) working in the cardiovascular field and other related areas.

The symposium starts with registration at 9.30am and ends at 6.30pm - following a networking reception, and the poster prize presentation.
