The NC3Rs held a 1-day workshop on 29 May 2008 to
discuss the role of toxicokinetic information in improving the
risk assessment of chemicals and advancing the 3Rs in
regulatory toxicology testing. The following questions were
considered at the workshop:
- What is the potential use and value of
integrated
toxicokinetic information for hazard identification
and risk assessment of chemicals?
- Can the further use of toxicokinetic information
in hazard identification and risk assessment lead
to advances in the 3Rs and if so how?
Particular emphasis was placed on how toxicokinetic
information is, or could be, applied in the different chemical
industry sectors. In particular, on the potential value and
transferability of approaches currently applied in the
pharmaceutical sector, and beginning to be applied in the
agrochemical sector.
The following themes were addressed by the speakers and in
the discussion groups:
- The role of toxicokinetics in hazard identification:
scope for the 3Rs
- The role of toxicokinetics in risk assessment: scope for
the 3Rs
- 3Rs methods for generation of toxicokinetic
information
Participants from all sectors of the chemical and
pharmaceutical industries, regulatory authorities and agencies,
and scientific researchers in the fields of toxicokinetics and
regulatory toxicology were invited to attend the workshop. For
further information see the programme (PDF, 89KB).
