£2.3M awarded for 3Rs research
3Rs Research Funding Scheme
The NC3Rs has awarded nine new project and pilot
grants. This year, over £2.3M has been invested
in projects ranging from the replacement of animal
models for tumour biology to pain assessment using
facial expressions in mice, rats, rabbits and
macaques.

Animal welfare: measures and assessment
NC3Rs/BBSRC joint highlight
notice
Working with the BBSRC, the NC3Rs has launched a
highlight notice to encourage research in the field of
measures and assessment of animal welfare. Proposals
involving laboratory animals will be considered under
the 2012 NC3Rs project grant scheme.

Funding Highlights launch
meeting
The NC3Rs will be launching its new research engine,
CRACK-IT®, and marking the publication of a review
of our research portfolio, at a meeting in central
London on 20 September. The event is free to attend but
registration is essential.

Human cell-based carcinogenicity assays
Strategic award application form now
available
The application form is now available for our
strategic award to develop novel human cell-based
systems that could provide mechanistic information to
support a weight of evidence, mode of action based
evaluation of the carcinogenic potential of
chemicals.
