Refinements in macaque husbandry DVDGood quality, easily accessible training materials are a vital component in training laboratory staff to house, care for, and interact with primates in ways that improve animal welfare. One of the 14 awards made in 2005 under the NC3Rs / LASA Small Awards Scheme was for development of a staff training DVD on refinements in primate husbandry. The DVD illustrates a range of husbandry refinements for macaques, including dedicated play areas adjoining the home cage which increase opportunities for environmental enrichment and social interaction, and a socialisation programme to encourage the primates to respond positively to human contact. Some refinements to procedural techniques are also included, such as training of macaques to stand for injections. Whilst the housing systems shown in the videos have since been superseded by new and improved systems, the DVD resource is still a valuable aid for illustrating how older systems, often still in use outside of the UK, can be adapted at relatively low cost to improve the welfare of the occupants. The DVD is available to buy online from Oxford University Veterinary Services. Alternatively, complete this order form and send it by post. As well as the main DVD-Video feature, the resource contains 25 short video clips which can be downloaded for use in presentations. Here are three examples:
Video of macaques in a dedicated play area (Windows Media, 6.6 MB, 27 secs).
Video of young macaques being socialised with humans prior to use in procedures (Windows Media, 4.9 MB, 21 secs).
Video of a macaque standing for injection (Windows Media, 2.4 MB, 10 secs). Related Documents
