Systematic reviews of animal research

Systematic reviews and meta-analysis have been useful tools to synthesise and analyse clinical research data generated by clinical trials in humans. More recently, there has been increasing interest in the application of systematic reviews of research involving animals.

In December 2006, the Weatherall Report on the use of non-human primates in research recommended that "the major funding organisations should undertake a systematic review of the outcome of all their research using non-human primates supported over the last decade." The Nuffield Council on Bioethics (May 2005) has also recommended that systematic reviews be undertaken to "evaluate more fully the predictability and transferability of animal models".

These recommendations highlight the ongoing debate about the need for, and utility of, systematic reviews (PDF, 76KB) of various aspects of research using animals.
