Applying advances in human prosthetics to chronic implants used in macaque neuroscience

We have awarded a new strategic grant to Professor Alex Thiele from Newcastle University, for a project which aims to refine the design of cranial implants used in neuroscience studies with macaques.

Our 2016 strategic award call challenged scientists to develop and validate novel approaches to address animal welfare concerns and scientific limitations associated with current implant methodologies. Alex’s work will focus on the implant’s adherence to skin, aiming to exploit recent advances in the design of human percutaneous prostheses.

 
 

 
 

Waiving in vivo studies in the development of monoclonal antibody biosimilar products

A report from an expert working group led by the NC3Rs has highlighted ways to reduce animal use in the development of monoclonal antibody (mAb) biosimilars.

The new publication argues for a more evidence driven approach for the toxicological assessment of mAb biosimilars.

 
 

 
 

Improving compliance with the ARRIVE guidelines

The CAMARADES group are carrying out a randomised controlled study to assess whether mandating the completion of an ARRIVE checklist improves reporting quality.

Reviewers are being sought for the study, which involves scoring manuscripts against an operationalised ARRIVE checklist. Reviewers’ names will be included in the resulting papers.

 

 

Launch of the Public engagement awards 2016

We are pleased to announce the launch of 2016 Public engagement awards, a scheme which celebrates the work of NC3Rs researchers and aims to support events and activities that engage the public with 3Rs research.

UK-based researchers who have been supported by the NC3Rs are eligible to apply for an award of up to £1,000, to fund an event or outreach activity that highlights the impacts of 3Rs research on science and society.

The deadline for the submission of applications is Friday 1 July 2016 at 4pm BST.

 

 

Solution: Human tissue-on-a-chip: a personalised response is possible

Do you think tissue-on-a-chip devices have the potential to improve drug and chemical development? Are you interested in the development and application of these devices in an industrial setting?

If so, researchers from the University of Hull would like to hear from you to explore how their microfluidic human tissue devices could reduce your use of animals for efficacy and safety testing of drugs and other chemicals and to establish patient-specific drug approaches.

 
 

 
 

Solution: devTOX human pluripotent stem cell-based developmental toxicity assays

Stemina Biomarker Discovery, Inc. is looking for partners to adopt and develop their cell-based assays for developmental toxicity screening. They offer two human stem cell-based assays: devTOX quickPredict for measuring developmental toxicity potential and devTOX Discovery for identifying mechanisms of toxicity.

 
 

 
 

Solution: Cell-based VAMP reporter assay for tetanus vaccine development

If you work in tetanus or botulinum vaccine development and are seeking a cell-based assay to replace rodent bioassays used to assess batch-to-batch consistency, then researchers from the University of Sheffield would like to hear from you.

Professor Bazbek Davletov and colleagues have engineered immortalised mouse neurons which carry a stabilised VAMP reporter molecule for assessing residual tetanus toxoid toxicity. They are now seeking partners to help select the best cell line clones and validate the assay using real toxoid samples.

 

 

Workshop: Using microsampling to refine blood sampling procedures in industry and academia

Tuesday 5 July: LONDON
We are hosting a one-day workshop to support academic and industry researchers looking to implement microsampling (sampling methods which require ≤50µl of blood) to reduce and refine animal use.

This workshop will bring together scientists from academia and industry to share their knowledge and experience of implementing microsampling approaches. The workshop will include case studies covering practical and 3Rs aspects of microsampling, along with facilitator-led breakout groups.

Attendees are welcome to submit poster abstracts on relevant topics. The deadline to submit an abstract is 15 June 2016.

Attendance is free, but registration is essential. The closing date for registration is 21 June 2016.
