Pre-conference workshop: Key concepts and resources for the design and reporting of animal experiments
Monday 6 November
Dr Stephen Turnock, Dr Nicola Foster and Dr Jessica Eddy
This three-hour workshop will discuss issues in the way animal research is currently designed, conducted and reported in the scientific literature. The session will cover key concepts in the design of animal experiments such as sample size determination, randomisation and masking (blinding) and present tools and resources available to support researchers. This includes the Experimental Design Assistant (EDA), an online tool to help researchers design robust in vivo experiments, and the ARRIVE Guidelines, a checklist of recommendations to improve the reporting of research involving animals.
ARRIVE and RIVER: NC3Rs guidelines to promote responsible reporting
Wednesday 8 November
Dr Nicola Foster
Incomplete reporting is a major contributing factor to the poor reliability of many preclinical studies. This talk will outline how the ARRIVE guidelines can be used to ensure rigorous reporting of in vivo studies. Nicola will also introduce the RIVER recommendations, a new set of reporting standards for in vitro studies.
Progressing on the 3Rs journey
Wednesday 8 November
Dr Jessica Eddy
This talk will cover NC3Rs resources which will help researchers, animal technicians and vets, as well as other members of the scientific community, put the 3Rs into practice. Topics will include evaluating environmental enrichment, refined techniques for mouse handling and the 3Rs self-assessment tools.
