NC3Rs at the British Science Festival 2014

This week we travelled to Birmingham to take part in this year's British Science Festival. The topic of our session: Keeping a watchful eye on animal behaviour.

Highlighting some of the projects we fund in this area, the session was led by our Chief Executive Vicky Robinson and featured talks by Sara Wells from MRC Harwell who is currently working on the Rodent Little Brother CRACK IT Challenge, Lynne Sneddon from Liverpool University who detailed her work to intelligently track zebrafish behaviour in their home tanks, and Matt Leach from Newcastle University who is using facial expressions to understand and monitor pain in animals.

We had a great turn out of interested members of the public, keen to gain more insight into the work we fund. Feedback showed that attendees were interested to learn more about progress in the 3Rs and particularly enjoyed the opportunities to interact with our researchers, from asessing videos of fish with Lynne, to scoring facial expressions using electronic voting systems with Matt.
